Athletes

Nomination process

SportsAid Scotland invites nominations each year from the National Governing Bodies of 30 or more sports and disciplines. Nominees must be identified and nominated by their National Governing Body of Sport's official representatives, based on their talent, their sporting potential, and their financial need. Athletes should meet the following criteria:

  • Performance : Currently competing at national level for their age group, and ranked within the top 3 nationally within their age-group, with potential to represent Scotland at senior level.
  • Age: between 12 and 22 years old; no age limit for disability sports.
  • Funding: should not be in receipt of over £1,000 of other funding, such as lottery-funded or sportscotland funded 'athlete personal awards', or Scottish Institute of Sport 'Winning students' funding.

If you feel that you meet these criteria, contact your National Governing Body to discuss your nomination for a Scottish Sports Aid award and request a SportsAid Scotland grant application form, which are available in October each year. There is usually a deadline of December 1 each year for lodging the completed applications, with the majority of grants being paid in February to April the following year.

SportsAid’s patron, Her Royal Highness Princess of Wales is helping to shine a light on the achievements and potential of young athletes throughout the UK – inspiring a generation who one day hope to represent the nation at the Olympic or Paralympic Games. SportsAid alumnus Sir Chris Hoy welcomed the patronage by saying, “SportsAid played an important role when I was starting out so I know what a huge boost this will be to the young sportsmen and women the charity helps today. As patron Her Royal Highness Princess of Wales will give them the profile they deserve.”
